SHRINE
“We can summarize that in a slogan. Man must dance. We’re not fully human unless we sing and dance”
Lucky People Center International (1998)
audiovisual piece.
One of the things I learned is how different approaches the night and the power of the night have amongst people. This diversity makes the polymorphisms of the night make much more sense to me and how more commercial or more cultural places exist in synergy. The night has grown to be the biggest part of my life, my biggest source of inspiration, deriving firstly from music, but also the importance it has for peers and how they come together to make nights full of it possible. It was really inspiring to see that even though the approaches towards it might be very different, a lot of people have one thing in common: that the night is vital for specific aspects of ourselves to grow, and it provides us with a much freer atmosphere to explore than the day does. This also came in with some concerns regarding the city of rotterdam, and its unfortunate lack of stable night venues that can provide everyone the chance to explore the power of the night. Now this concern was not something new to me personally, but seeing how a lot of people’s needs for the time of night are not being covered, reignited how crucial it is.
This is part of the full video, it also included sound.
The aim of it is to show transformation and confrontation of self in club settings, as well as dealing with trauma and connection to one’s body. By sharing something that personal a wider range of perspectives is created, people that can relate to it feel seen, and the importance of sustaining the span of nightlife gets a texture that is commonly skipped, which is the role it plays for one’s personal development as an individual, but also as an individual as part of a community. To me, this is the most important value one can take from nightlife but also consider when it comes to its extinction.
